Berea Eyes Chicken Ordinance
BEREA – The city of Berea is currently considering an ordinance that would enable residents to keep chickens on their property.
During a meeting of the Berea City Council Tuesday night, Mayor Steve Connelly told visitors that revisions to a current ordinance is under consideration by the Berea Planning and Zoning Commission. Proposed changes will then be passed onto the city attorney for review, and will eventually be presented to the Berea City Council for final approval.
Under the proposed changes, residents within city limits could have up to five chickens on their property, provided that they are far enough away from their neighbor’s residence. In addition, the ordinance would prohibit property owners or renters from keeping roosters on the same property.
Codes Enforcement Administrator Dale Van Winkle noted that the city is in the process of revising an antiquated ordinance, which allowed residents to keep up to 25 chickens on their property.
Mayor Connelly said the proposed ordinance will be posted online so it can be reviewed for comments from city residents.
