KU Won’t Raise Electricity Rates On Berea Customers...Yet
BEREA – Berea’s electric rates won’t increase any time soon.
That was the word from Berea Utilities Director Donald Blackburn Tuesday who said there have been numerous inquiries following an announcement by Kentucky Utilities that the company will be increasing its electric rates on its residential customers by approximately 12 percent.
But Blackburn said that does not affect Berea, which is one of KU’s wholesale customers. Berea Utilities, in turn, sells electricity to Berea residents.
Blackburn didn’t entirely rule out a rate increase in 2010, however, noting that the city would know more in May, when KU will meet with the state utilities commission.
On a related note, Blackburn alerted residents to a recent solicitation, possibly a scam, in which a Florida company is attempting to sell insurance to Berea Utilities customers to insure their water lines.
Blackburn said though the notice bears the city’s name, the program is not condoned or approved by the city in any way.
