Appalachia - Science in the Public Interest

On October 6, 2007, thousands of Americans will open their energy efficient, solar powered homes and businesses to their neighbors to give them a chance to learn how to incorporate energy saving technologies into their own lives.

Locally, Appalachia- Science in the Public Interest (A-SPI), in partnership with the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) is coordinating this effort in what has become the largest demonstration of installed renewable energy technologies and energy efficient building practices in the country.

Concerns about global warming, energy security and ever increasing fuel prices have more home and business owners than ever switching to solar power.

Buildings as diverse as private homes, science museums and baseball parks are implementing solar technology.
The American Solar Energy Society has been growing its grassroots National Solar Tour for the past 12 years. Interest in this event has skyrocketed as more people seek environmentally friendly sources of power. The impact has been substantial.

A recent survey showed that a majority of the people who attend a tour later go on to add solar technologies to their own buildings. The tour gives them an opportunity to learn first hand how solar works, how much it costs, and how much it saves. This year the National Solar Tour will include open-house showings in 48 states. More than 100-thousand people are expected to attend.

According to recent U.S. EPA figures, residential and commercial buildings generate approximately 40% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a higher percentage than either transportation or manufacturing. (Source: United States Environmental Protection Agency inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas emissions, April 2007).

There’s a significant trend toward reducing this carbon footprint. Many builders now incorporate energy efficiency into the creation of new homes. Neighborhoods that rely exclusively on solar power are under construction. Solar technologies have worked their way into mainstream America and solar systems can now be purchased at local home improvement store.

The theme of this year’s National Solar Tour is Real Places for Real People. It offers the public an opportunity to tour solar homes and buildings in their own communities, speak with homeowners and experts, and learn how solar technology works. Tours will be taking place in Lexington, Louisville, Berea, Frankfort, Bowling Green, and Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati.

The American Solar Energy Society has been in existence for 52 years. It is a not-for-profit public benefit corporation, dedicated to promoting the use of solar and sustainable energy. Information and awareness help this trend grow. A complete list of solar tours, along with additional information about the National Solar Tour is available at:
