For Rita Smart:
In Richmond growth seems to mean take all the business from one area and move it to another: Downtown to Bypass/ Lancaster Avenue in the seventies, then to bypass/ US 25, and now to the Barnesmill/Interstate area.
I would like to know your views or ideas about encouraging businesses, parks, services, etc., to spread out across the city to better serve the community?
With fuel cost rising and the desire to have more leisure time, the trend across the country, and in newer areas of Richmond, seems to be planned communities where you can; work, play, worship, go to the doctor, attend school, etc.; close to where you live. We used to call them neighborhoods. How can we establish this in the older parts of Richmond?
Answer: Historically, the consumer drives the development. In the 70's we wanted new development, bigger su...

For Rita Smart:
I live & work in downtown. One thing that perplexes me are the walk signs. Why do they require a a push button to activate the friendly walk signal. Shouldn't we pedestrians have priority over the speeding cars? If you arrive at a crosswalk, say Main Street for example, and the traffic light is in the pedestrians favor, the walk sign says "don't walk", the pedestrian has to push the button and wait another cycle (seems like 5 min) to get the "walk" sign.
This is very time consuming, aggrivating & pedestrian unfriendly. I know of no other downtown area where the walk signs are done this way. In other cities the walk sign comes on automatically. I could see a push button at intersections that get infrequent foot traffic where cars should be favored(such as the By-Pass). But not Downtown!
What is your position on this & if elected, will you do something to change it?
Answer: Pedestrian, I know your frustrations. Living and working in downtown, I too have asked the same que...
